Mindmapping for Increased Creativity

When we hear the word mindmapping, we often think of group work in high school, with lots of colorful pens and few productive and tangible ideas. However, contrary to popular belief, mindmapping can be a powerful tool for increased creativity in management, entrepreneurship, art, and freelancing.
Due to its lateral (cyclical) nature, mindmapping mimics the way we think more accurately than vertical (linear) lists. Instead of writing down goals, activities to be completed, or even financial assessments in random order in list-format, compartmentalizing them through the bubbles used in mindmaps provides the page with more structure and allows for ordered expansion.
While you can use different colors and large sheets, making a mindmap does not have to take more effort than regular lists. Think about what you want to accomplish with the mindmap – if it is just your regular to-do list for the day, do you really think it’s necessary to make it a crafts project? On the other hand, if you plan to use the document over a longer period of time, it might be worth the effort of color coding to ensure greater clarity.
One technique of mindmapping is using reusable boards. If you have one in your office and dedicate it as your creative space for mindmapping, keep four different non-permanent colors around and make a mindmap whenever you need to solve a problem (small or large). If you want to keep your mindmap for further use, copy it down on paper. Always make sure you leave some room in case you want to add more ideas to a particular department later.
You can use mindmapping for a variety of activities: shopping lists, budgeting, essay-planning, brainstorming, goal-setting, etc.
Lastly, if mindmapping becomes an invaluable part of your planning-process, consider getting a mindmapping software. There are plenty of free mindmapping tools online and they come with helpful and creative functions to make your organization processes a lot easier and more fun.
